Leiomyosarcoma of the Stomach

Abstract
It is hard to differentiate, between the benign leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma by gross finding and microscopic finding. 40% of all gastric benign tumors are leiomyoma, and less than 1% of all gastric malignancy are leiomyosarcoma. The most common symptoms are U.G.I. bleeding, epigastric pain and palpable mass, but early symptoms are rare. It is difficult to make a diagnosis and differentiate by radiologic studies and endoscopic studies. The prognosis of the leiomyosarcoma is better than carcinoma or other sarcoma of the stomach.
An emergency laparotomy on a case who had massive U.G.I. bleeding, revealed a leiomyosarcoma on the greater curvature of the stomach with a deep penetrating ulcer on the mucosal aspect and an exposed blood vessel at the ulcer bed.
Pathologic- report showed leiomyosarcoma with ulcer.
